All my life, my parents have exposed me to music. When I was a kid, they'd mostly play The Beatles (I loved watching Yellow Submarine as a kid xD), The Monkees, Esquivel, etc. I grew up listening to that stuff and ended up liking it, along with some of the more modern pop. Just recently my dad has gotten into collecting old 78s and playing them, and it's sort of fascinating to listen to the type of music they played (in America) a hundred years ago.
So I was wondering what sort of music did you guys listen to while you were growing up?

My parents had an old record player, and the only record that worked was the Doors. I listened to them when I was abot 8. That's why I couldn't understand why everyone started thinking the Doors were awesome in junior high.
I like the B-52s, older REM, and Megadeth. Odd combination huh? I also stock up on Irish music durring St. Patrick's day.

When I was a kid, my parents always played Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, AC/DC, and Gwen Stefani. Gwen was an odd musician to go in that mixture of artists, but she is a good singer and I still listen to her from time to time today.

Man, I feel so unsophisticated (in a musical sense) when I hear what all you folks listen to; Clearly definable taste in clearly definable genres. For me, that is not the case. My taste in music can be described as being a bit "scattered".
I grew up listening to ROCK AND ROLL. See, having a father who is a disk jockey at a classic rock station kind of helped that along. After a while, my musical preference got splattered by outside influences and flew in every direction (except country and rap, bleck).
Nowadays, to be honest, metal is generally prefered over most genres. Not Death metal, not black metal, just plain old Metal. Rock and Roll frequently makes a cameo on my iTunes as well. Every once in a while, something odd will pop up, like Frank Sinatra or James Brown, etc.
